After an intense first day of competition at the Elite Flag Nationals Tournament in Kingston, Ontario, players hit the field Saturday morning prepared to heat things up on day two.
The U14 Men once again claimed the first victory of the day for Team New Brunswick, battling Nova Scotia in a close game. New Brunswick walked away with a hard-fought 41-33 win. Quarterback Axl Donovan continued his strong play, completing 16 of 23 passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns. Mason Parise put on another strong performance, recording eight receptions for 88 yards and two touchdowns, while Blake Morrison excelled with 61 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Despite being the province’s first U14 Men’s team to attend Nationals, the group is not only leading New Brunswick in wins but has already met their pre-tournament goal with one day still remaining in the competition.
“Our team set a goal, to win two games…. and I think we’re going to do it.” Said Head Coach Hughes, following their day one victory.
Bringing redemption on day two, the U16 Women earned New Brunswick’s first points in the women’s division. Allyson Forster sparked the breakthrough moment with a momentum-shifting interception, giving Avry Wortman the opportunity to strike in the endzone. Watch the highlight clip here.
“It felt really good because I felt like I pushed my team up… it changed, emotionally and physically, the impact of the game,” said Forster, who picked off the pass.
Despite the loss, the U16 Women say the tournament has been amazing, and encourage other girls to try the sport.
“It was so fun.” Said Wartman. “Everyone’s so nice and very including. Even if you’ve never played the sport, there’s always a spot for you.”
